What Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? A Beginner's Introduction to BJJ

What Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling martial art that focuses on ground fighting, positional control, and submission techniques (joint locks and chokes). It was developed in Brazil from judo, refined by the Gracie family, and became globally known after dominating early UFC events.

The Core Principle: Leverage Over Strength

BJJ's central principle is that a smaller, weaker person can control and submit a larger, stronger opponent by using proper technique, leverage, and positional advantage. This makes it one of the most practical martial arts for real-world self-defence.

How BJJ Training Works

BJJ training involves drilling techniques, learning positions, and live sparring (called "rolling"). The belt ranking system (white → blue → purple → brown → black) is one of the most rigorous in all martial arts — a black belt typically takes 10–12 years to earn.

What to Expect in Your First Class

You will learn how to fall safely, basic positions (guard, mount, side control), and simple escapes. Wear a gi (kimono) or shorts and a rash guard for no-gi classes. The Hayabusa Essential Gold Weave Gi is an excellent starting point.

Why Train BJJ?

BJJ is one of the best martial arts for fitness, self-defence, and competition. It is also one of the most intellectually engaging — often described as physical chess. It can be trained safely at full intensity due to the tap-out mechanism.
