BJJ Belt System Explained: How Long Does Each Rank Take?

The Five Adult BJJ Belt Ranks

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has one of the most deliberate promotion systems in martial arts. The five adult belts — white, blue, purple, brown, and black — each require years of dedicated training.

White Belt

The starting point for every BJJ practitioner. Duration: typically 1–2 years before promotion to blue belt. Key gear: a well-fitting gi (Hayabusa Essential Gold Weave or Ascend Lightweight Gi).

Blue Belt

The first major milestone — solid understanding of guard, mount, back control, and basic submission chains. Duration: 2–3 years at blue belt before purple.

Purple Belt

You are now developing your personal game. Duration: 2–4 years. A quality gi like the Hayabusa Goorudo 3 is worth the investment.

Brown Belt

The refining stage. Duration: 1–2 years before black.

Black Belt

Mastery of the fundamentals and a deep personal game. The average time from white belt to black belt is 10–12 years. There are 10 degrees of black belt.

The Stripe System

Most academies award 1–4 stripes between each belt promotion. A fourth stripe generally signals readiness for the next belt.
