What to Wear to Your First BJJ Class: A Beginner's Guide

What to Wear to Your First BJJ Class

Walking into your first BJJ class can feel intimidating. Knowing what to wear makes it one less thing to worry about.

If the Class Is Gi

You need a kimono (gi) — a jacket, pants, and belt. For your first class, most gyms will lend you a gi or allow shorts and a t-shirt while you decide if you want to continue. When you're ready to buy, the Hayabusa Essential Gold Weave Gi and Hayabusa Ascend Lightweight Gi are excellent first gis in all three IBJJF-approved colors.

If the Class Is No-Gi

You need compression shorts or grappling shorts and a rash guard. Board shorts and cotton t-shirts are uncomfortable and can catch on the mat. The Hayabusa Men's Apex Short Sleeve Rash Guard and Hayabusa Apex or Core Fight Shorts are ideal choices.

Essential Gear

Mouthguard — mandatory for any sparring. Ear guards (optional but recommended if you spar regularly — cauliflower ear is permanent). Nail clippers — trim your fingernails and toenails before every class. It's gym etiquette and protects your training partners.

What Not to Wear

No shoes on the mat (bare feet or BJJ shoes only). No jewellery (rings, necklaces, earrings all cause injuries). No zippers or pockets on shorts — they catch fingers and toes during rolling.
