Competition gloves differ from training gloves in two important ways. First, they are almost always lace-up — the tighter, more even wrap distributes padding evenly and eliminates the wrist-strap gap that velcro closures create. At the sanctioned amateur and professional level, lace-up gloves are typically required. Second, the padding is layered for performance rather than volume — slightly firmer to transmit scoring punches cleanly while still meeting safety standards for both fighters.
