Weightlifting Belt Buyer's Guide: How to Choose the Right Belt for Squats and Deadlifts

Do You Actually Need a Weightlifting Belt?

A weightlifting belt increases intra-abdominal pressure, which stabilises your spine during heavy compound lifts. For most recreational lifters, a belt becomes useful once you are lifting at or near bodyweight in the squat and deadlift.

Leather vs. Nylon vs. Neoprene

Leather belts are the most rigid and offer the greatest support. Preferred by powerlifters and serious strength athletes. Nylon belts (RDX RX1) are lighter, more flexible, and better for CrossFit and dynamic movements. Neoprene belts (RDX X3) are a middle ground.

Width: 4 Inch vs. 6 Inch

A 4-inch belt suits the majority of lifters. A 6-inch belt provides additional lower back coverage for powerlifters performing very heavy squats and deadlifts.

Lever vs. Prong Buckle

Lever buckles allow for faster on/off between sets. Prong buckles are more adjustable and suit lifters whose waist size fluctuates. For competition, check your federation's rules — IPL and USPA approve several RDX models.

Top RDX Belt Picks

The RDX RD1 4-inch cowhide powerlifting belt is a great starting point for serious lifters. The RX1 nylon belt is ideal for CrossFit and general gym use. The 4-inch IPL/USPA approved nubuck lever belt is the top choice for competition powerlifters.

Break-In Period

Leather belts require 4–8 weeks of regular use before they feel comfortable. Nylon and neoprene belts are ready from day one.
