Why Glove Selection Matters
Boxing gloves aren't one-size-fits-all. The right pair protects your hands, wrists, and sparring partners — the wrong pair leads to injury.
Glove Weight: What the Ounces Mean
- 8–10 oz: Competition gloves. Not for sparring.
- 12 oz: Bag and pad work for lighter fighters (under 130 lbs).
- 14 oz: Bag work and light sparring for fighters 130–160 lbs.
- 16 oz: The standard sparring glove for most adults.
- 18–20 oz: Heavy sparring gloves for heavier fighters.
Bag Gloves vs. Sparring Gloves
Bag gloves are designed to protect your knuckles during heavy bag, speed bag, and pad work. Sparring gloves have more padding to protect your partner's face and head. Never spar with bag gloves. For most beginners, a single pair of 14–16 oz gloves can serve both purposes early on.
Lace-Up vs. Velcro
Lace-up gloves provide a tighter, more customizable fit and are preferred for competition. Velcro (hook-and-loop) gloves are easy to put on and take off solo, making them the default choice for training.
Materials: Leather vs. Synthetic
Genuine leather gloves last longer and mold to your hand over time. Synthetic/faux leather gloves are more affordable and fine for casual training. If you're training 3+ times per week, leather is worth the investment.
Sizing Tips
Measure around the widest part of your hand (knuckles): under 7": S; 7–7.5": M; 7.5–8": L; over 8": XL. When in doubt, size up — you want room to wrap your hands underneath without cramping.
