Why the Right BJJ Gi Makes a Difference
Your Brazilian jiu jitsu gi is your most-used piece of gear on the mat. It needs to survive collar grips, sleeve grabs, guard passing, and hundreds of washes — while keeping you cool and comfortable during hard rolls.
Gi Weight
BJJ gis come in lightweight (350–450 gsm) and mid/heavy weight (550–700 gsm). Lightweight gis are ideal for warm gyms, hot climates, and competition travel. Heavier gis are more durable and tougher to grip. Most beginners do well starting mid-weight around 450–550 gsm.
Fit Guide
- Jacket sleeves: 5–8 cm above the wrist
- Jacket length: covers the belt and falls mid-thigh
- Pants length: 5–8 cm above the ankle
- Collar: firm enough to hold its shape under grips
IBJJF Competition Rules
For IBJJF competition, your gi must be white, blue, or black. The top and bottom must match. Patches must comply with IBJJF placement rules. Always check the current rulebook before a competition.
Men's vs Women's Cuts
Women's BJJ gis are cut differently through the hips, shoulders, and chest, reducing excess fabric for a better fit. If you are a woman training regularly, a women's-specific cut is worth investing in.
