Why Proper Gi Care Matters
Your martial arts gi is an investment. Proper care keeps your uniform looking sharp, smelling fresh, and lasting for years. Neglecting your gi leads to shrinkage, fading, odor buildup, and premature wear.
Washing Your Gi: Step-by-Step
1. Wash After Every Session
Sweat, bacteria, and mat grime accumulate quickly. Make it a habit to wash your gi the same day you train.
2. Use Cold or Warm Water — Not Hot
Hot water is the enemy of your gi. It causes significant shrinkage, especially in cotton gis that aren't pre-shrunk. Stick to cold or warm water (30°C max) for regular washes.
3. Use a Mild Detergent
Avoid fabric softeners — they coat fibers and reduce the gi's ability to wick moisture.
4. Turn Your Gi Inside Out
Washing inside out protects the outer surface from abrasion and helps preserve embroidery, patches, and color.
Drying Your Gi
The dryer is the fastest way to shrink your gi. Air drying is always the preferred method. Hang on a wide hanger or lay flat in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight.
Dealing with Odors
Add 1 cup of white vinegar to a cold water soak for 30 minutes before washing. Vinegar neutralizes odor-causing bacteria without damaging fabric.
Removing Stains
Blood stains: Rinse immediately with cold water. Apply hydrogen peroxide or an enzyme-based stain remover before washing.
General dirt: A pre-soak in cold water with detergent for 30 minutes usually does the trick.
