Two Pillars of Grappling
Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are the two most dominant grappling disciplines in modern MMA, forming the foundation of virtually every elite combat athlete's ground game.
Origins and Philosophy
Wrestling focuses on takedowns, controlling the opponent, and pinning. BJJ emphasises ground fighting, positional control, and submission techniques (joint locks and chokes).
Key Differences
Wrestling prioritises takedowns, scrambles, and top control. Submissions are not part of the competitive wrestling ruleset. BJJ prioritises positional hierarchy on the ground (guard, side control, mount, back) and submission attacks.
What Each Does Better
Wrestling is superior for takedown offense and defense — wrestlers control where a fight takes place. BJJ is superior for submissions and guard work from the bottom position.
MMA Applications
In MMA, wrestling provides the ability to take the fight to the ground (or keep it standing). BJJ provides the submission arsenal once on the ground. Most elite MMA fighters train both.
Which Should You Train?
For MMA: both. Wrestling first if your takedown game is weak; BJJ if you already have solid takedowns. For self-defence: wrestling's clinch control is directly applicable, while BJJ's guard and submission work becomes relevant once the fight is on the ground.
