Two of the World's Most Popular Striking Arts
Taekwondo and karate are the two most widely practised traditional striking martial arts globally. Both teach striking, both use a coloured belt progression system, and both are excellent choices for children and adults. But they are distinct disciplines with fundamentally different techniques, competition formats, and training philosophies.
Origins and Philosophy
Karate originated in Okinawa, Japan, drawing from indigenous Okinawan fighting methods. Taekwondo was codified in Korea in the 1950s–60s as a modern sport martial art with an emphasis on spectacular kicking techniques. It became an Olympic sport in 2000.
Techniques: What You Actually Learn
Karate develops a roughly balanced striking system — punches, kicks, open-hand strikes, blocks, and sweeps. The balance varies by style: Shotokan emphasises powerful linear techniques; Kyokushin develops exceptional full-contact body conditioning.
Taekwondo is heavily kicking-focused. Approximately 70–80% of scoring in WT competition involves kicks — particularly spinning and jumping kicks. The result is arguably the most spectacular kicking system in any martial art.
Competition Rules
WKF Olympic-style karate uses light-contact point scoring. WT Taekwondo uses electronic scoring vests and allows full-force kicks to the body and head — creating a fast, high-scoring competition format.
Which Is Better for Self-Defence?
Both provide useful self-defence tools. Karate's balanced hand-and-foot curriculum has more direct street applicability. Taekwondo's kicking skill is genuinely dangerous but requires more range to deploy effectively.
Which Is Better for Kids?
Both are outstanding for children. Taekwondo's dynamic kick-heavy curriculum tends to be particularly engaging for younger students. The quality of the specific school and instructor matters far more than the style choice.
