Karate vs Taekwondo: What's the Difference and Which Should You Learn?

Two of the World's Most Popular Martial Arts

Karate and taekwondo share some surface similarities — both involve striking, both have coloured belt systems, and both are practised in a gi-style uniform — but they are distinct disciplines with very different techniques, competition rules, and training cultures.

Origins

Karate originated in Okinawa, Japan. It emphasises a balance of hand and foot techniques. Taekwondo originated in Korea in the mid-20th century. It emphasises high, spinning kicks and became an Olympic sport in 2000.

Techniques

Karate teaches punches, kicks, open-hand strikes, blocks, and sweeps. The emphasis is roughly balanced between upper and lower body. Taekwondo is heavily kicking-focused — approximately 70–80% of scoring techniques involve kicks, particularly to the head and trunk.

Uniforms

Both arts use a jacket-and-pants uniform. In karate it's called a gi; in taekwondo it's called a dobok. Taekwondo doboks are typically lighter and more flexible to accommodate high-kicking techniques.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose karate if: you want a balanced striking system with strong traditional philosophy. Choose taekwondo if: you want to develop spectacular kicking technique and are interested in Olympic competition. Both are excellent choices for children.
