Is Taekwondo Good for Kids?
Taekwondo is one of the most popular martial arts for children worldwide. Its emphasis on kicking technique, discipline, and the structured belt system makes it an excellent activity for developing coordination, confidence, and fitness in children from age 4 upward.
What Age Can Children Start Taekwondo?
Most schools accept children from age 4–5 for tot/beginner programs. Formal belt testing typically begins around age 6–7. Teenagers can join standard adult classes or youth-specific classes depending on the school.
What to Expect in a Kids Taekwondo Class
Classes typically last 45–60 minutes and cover: warm-up, basic kicks (front kick, roundhouse, side kick), blocks and punches, forms (poomsae), partner drills, and occasional light sparring. Classes emphasise discipline and respect as much as technique.
Gear Your Child Needs
Taekwondo Uniform (Dobok)
A lightweight dobok is the first purchase. The Rhingo Short Sleeve Taekwondo Uniform is excellent for younger students; the Rhingo Ribbed Dobok is a popular choice for more advanced students.
Sparring Gear (for contact classes)
Once your child begins sparring, you will need: head guard, chest guard (hogu), shin guards, hand protectors, and foot protectors. The Rhingo Karate Chest Guard and Rhingo Taekwondo Reversible String Chest Guard are excellent value options.
Mouthguard
Required from the first contact session. The Hayabusa Combat Youth Mouth Guard is purpose-built for junior fighters.
Tips for Parents
Attend trial classes before committing. Look for instructors who balance discipline with fun. Ask about the school's sparring policy for children — many beginner programs do not include contact sparring until children are 8–10 years old.
