Kids Martial Arts Guide: How to Choose the Right Gear for Children Starting Martial Arts

Getting Your Child Started in Martial Arts

Starting your child in martial arts is one of the best investments you can make in their physical and personal development. This guide covers what your child needs at each stage — and what to avoid buying too early.

The First Purchase: Uniform

Wait until your child has attended a trial class and committed to the activity before purchasing.

  • Karate: A lightweight cotton karate gi. White is standard for beginners. Many sets include a free white belt.
  • Taekwondo: A lightweight dobok. V-neck white doboks are standard for beginners in most WT schools. The Rhingo Short Sleeve Dobok is excellent for summer or younger children.
  • BJJ: A kids BJJ gi in white, blue, or black. The Hayabusa Children's Essential Jiu-Jitsu Gi is an excellent choice with free belt included.

Sparring Gear (When Ready)

Most children's programs delay contact sparring until ages 6–10. Do not buy sparring gear until your child's instructor says they are ready. When that time comes: head guard, chest guard (for taekwondo), shin guards, gloves, and mouthguard. The Hayabusa T3 Kids Boxing Gloves (6–10 oz) deliver pro-level wrist support in youth sizing. The Hayabusa Combat Youth Mouth Guard is mandatory from the first contact session.

What Not to Buy Too Early

Avoid buying full sparring sets before your child is enrolled and their instructor has confirmed sparring requirements. Children grow quickly — gear bought too early may not fit by the time they actually need it.
