Taekwondo Sparring Gear Complete Guide: What You Need for Contact Training

Getting Started with Taekwondo Sparring

Moving from forms and basics to contact sparring is a major milestone in Taekwondo training. Having the right protective gear ensures you can train hard, stay safe, and build real confidence in your techniques.

Chest Guard (Hogu)

The chest guard (hogu) is the centrepiece of TKD sparring protection. It covers the chest and sides, and in Olympic Taekwondo it is where electronic scoring sensors are fitted. The Rhingo Karate Chest Guard comes in a foam-padded vinyl construction, and the Rhingo Taekwondo Reversible String Chest Guard allows for easy red/blue switching between competitors.

Head Guard

Head guards protect against kicks to the head, which score highly in competition. Look for a well-padded guard that does not obstruct peripheral vision.

Hand and Foot Pads

TKD sparring gloves protect the hands and forearms. Foot protectors cushion your kicks and protect your toes and instep. WAKO and WT-approved options are available from RDX for competition training.

Mouthguard and Groin Guard

A boil-and-bite mouthguard is essential from your first contact session. Males should also wear a groin guard, available in cup and brief styles.

Choosing a Uniform (Dobok)

For sparring, your dobok needs to handle dynamic kicking without restricting movement. The Rhingo Short Sleeve Taekwondo Uniform is great for summer training, while the Rhingo Ribbed Dobok is the standard choice for coloured belts.

Putting It All Together

A complete sparring set (chest guard, head guard, gloves, foot pads, mouthguard, groin guard) typically runs $80–$150 depending on quality. Start with a solid hogu and mouthguard, then add the rest as your training intensifies.
