How to Choose a Jiu Jitsu Gi for Competition: IBJJF Rules Explained

IBJJF Gi Requirements

If you plan to compete in IBJJF-sanctioned events, your gi must meet specific rules. Understanding these requirements helps you choose a gi that is legal before tournament day.

Approved Colors

IBJJF competition allows three gi colors: white, black, and royal blue. Mixed colors within the same gi are not permitted. White is the most universally accepted choice.

Minimum Fabric Thickness

The jacket must be made from cotton or cotton-blend material that cannot be easily seen through. Pearl weave is the most common competition-legal weave. Hayabusa's Goorudo 3, Essential Gold Weave, Warrior Gold Weave, and Ascend Lightweight Gi are all competition-legal options.

Patch Rules

IBJJF has specific rules about where patches can be placed. Always check the current IBJJF gi inspection document before adding patches.

Fit Requirements

Jacket sleeves must reach no more than 5 cm from the wrist. Pants must reach no more than 5 cm from the ankle.

Best Hayabusa Competition Gis

The Hayabusa Essential Gold Weave Gi is an excellent all-round competition choice in white, black, and blue. The Goorudo 3 is a premium competition kimono. The Ascend Lightweight Gi suits hot-climate competitions.
