Understanding BJJ Gi Sizing
BJJ gi sizing uses a letter-number system (A0–A7 for adults, M000–M4 for kids) that corresponds to height and weight ranges. Unlike clothing sizes, BJJ gi sizes are not directly comparable across brands — the same person may be an A2 in one brand and an A3 in another.
The A-Size System (Adults)
A0: Under 5'4" / under 130 lbs.
A1: 5'4"–5'7" / 130–160 lbs.
A2: 5'7"–5'11" / 160–190 lbs — the most common adult size.
A3: 5'10"–6'2" / 180–220 lbs.
A4: 6'0"–6'3" / 200–240 lbs.
A5: 6'2"+ / 240 lbs+.
How to Measure Yourself
Measure your height (barefoot) and your weight. Use the brand's specific size chart — not a generic one. If you are between two sizes and wash in cold water and hang dry, go for the smaller size. If you machine wash warm, go for the larger size to account for shrinkage.
Pre-Shrunk vs Unshrunk
Most quality BJJ gis (including all Hayabusa models) are pre-shrunk before sale. This means the size you buy is the size you keep, assuming you follow the care instructions. Pre-shrunk gis are preferable for competition where consistent sizing matters.
Fit Points to Check
Sleeve length should end no more than 5cm above the wrist. Jacket length should reach the hip or just below. Trouser length should end within 5cm of the ankle. These are also the IBJJF measurement requirements for competition.
Women's Sizing
Women's BJJ gis use a W-size system (W0–W6). Hayabusa offers women's-specific cuts in their Essential Gold Weave, Goorudo 3, and Ascend Lightweight Gi lines.
