What Equipment Do You Need for Karate? A Complete Beginner Gear List

Getting Started in Karate

Karate is one of the most accessible martial arts to start — most schools require only a basic uniform to begin training. As you progress and begin contact sparring (kumite), additional protective equipment becomes necessary.

Stage 1: Starting Out (First Day to First Belt)

Karate Gi (Uniform)

A standard 8–10 oz karate gi is ideal for beginners. White is the standard color for beginners in most styles. Most beginner gi sets include a white belt.

Stage 2: Intermediate Training (Coloured Belt)

Sparring Mitts (Hand Protectors)

Lightweight open-palm foam mitts protect your knuckles during contact sparring (kumite). Required for all contact classes once you begin partner work.

Foot Protectors

Foam foot pads protect both your feet and your opponent during kickwork. Many schools require reversible red and blue protectors for tournament-style sparring.

Shin Guards and Head Guard

A WKF-style foam head guard covers the forehead, temples, and cheeks. Required for contact sparring at intermediate and advanced levels.

Stage 3: Competition

Chest Guard, Mouthguard, and Training Pads

Full coverage chest protectors are required for many tournament formats. A boil-and-bite mouthguard is mandatory for all contact sparring.

Budget Summary

Starter kit (gi, belt): $30–$70. Intermediate sparring kit: $60–$120. Advanced kit: $50–$100.
