Getting Started in MMA
Mixed martial arts combines striking, wrestling, and ground fighting into one demanding sport. MMA training requires gear for multiple contexts: boxing and kickboxing, grappling and takedown work, and ground fighting.
MMA Gloves vs. Boxing Gloves
MMA gloves are open-fingered, typically 4–7 oz, and designed for striking and grappling at the same time. For pure boxing rounds and heavy bag training, use standard boxing gloves (12–16 oz) which provide better hand and wrist protection. Most MMA fighters train with both.
MMA Shorts
MMA shorts are cut wide in the hips and thighs for high kicks, have side slits for full range of motion on the ground, and use a secure waistband that stays put during takedowns.
Rash Guards and Compression Shorts
Rash guards protect your skin from mat burns and reduce friction during clinch and ground work. Compression shorts provide modesty coverage and keep a cup in place during training.
Mouth Guard
Non-negotiable from day one of any contact training. Boil-and-bite guards like the RDX 3W or Hayabusa Combat Mouth Guard are the standard training choice.
Shin Guards
Required for kickboxing and Muay Thai-style sparring in MMA training. Look for guards with a secure ankle strap and foam that covers the full shin and instep.
Headgear and Groin Protection
Headgear is typically required for beginner/intermediate sparring. A groin cup is required for all contact sparring.
