Karate Gi Size Chart for Kids & Adults: How to Pick the Right Uniform Size

Buying a first karate gi is confusing. Sizes run 000000, 00000, 0000, 000, 00, 0, 1, 2, 3…8 instead of S/M/L, and every brand's chart is a little different. Here's how it works.

How gi sizes work

Martial arts uniforms are sized mainly by height, then adjusted for build. The more zeros, the smaller the size: "000" fits a small child, while "5" fits an average adult man.

Typical karate gi size chart

Sizes 0000 and smaller (down to 000000) are for toddlers and very small children. Check each product page for those. This is a typical chart. Always check the size chart on the specific product, because brands vary by a few inches.

Lightweight vs heavyweight

• Lightweight (7–8 oz): cool, cheap and easy to wash. The standard choice for beginners and kids. Example: our 8 oz lightweight gi with free belt.
• Heavyweight (12–16 oz): crisp "snap" on techniques, lasts years, and is preferred for kata and by senior ranks. Example: 14 oz heavyweight gi.

Shrinkage: the mistake everyone makes

Cotton and cotton-blend gis can shrink after the first few hot washes, mostly in length. To avoid surprises:

1. Wash in cold water and hang dry (see our uniform care guide).
2. If you're between sizes, size up, especially for 100% cotton heavyweights.
3. For kids, sizing up one size gives about a year of growth. Roll the sleeves for the first few months.

Fit check

• Jacket sleeves should reach roughly mid-forearm to wrist.
• Pants should sit just above the ankle bone.
• The jacket should overlap comfortably without pulling open during a kick.
