Judo Uniform Guide: How to Choose the Right Judogi for Training and Competition

Choosing the Right Judogi

A judogi (judo uniform) needs to be durable enough to withstand constant sleeve, collar, and lapel grips. This guide covers what to look for when buying a judo gi for training or competition.

Single Weave vs Double Weave

Single weave judogi are lighter and more comfortable for training, especially in warm climates. Double weave judogi are heavier and more durable — the preferred choice for serious competition because they are harder to grip and last longer under intense use. Most beginners start with single weave and progress to double weave.

IJF Approval

For competition under IJF (International Judo Federation) rules, your judogi must meet specific standards covering fabric weight, collar thickness, sleeve and trouser length, and colour. If you plan to compete, verify your gi is IJF approved before your first tournament.

Color

Traditional judo uses white gi. In IJF competition, both white and blue are used — one competitor typically wears white, the other blue to help judges distinguish them. Check with your club before purchasing blue.

Sizing

Judogi are sized by height (0 through 7) with wider proportions than karate gis to accommodate the gripping demands of the sport. When in doubt, choose a size that fits your height even if the waist feels slightly loose — the pants drawstring handles the waist adjustment.

Shrinkage

Cotton judogi shrink significantly in hot water. Wash in cold water and hang dry to control shrinkage. Pre-washed gis are preferable if you need a specific size maintained long-term.
