MMA Gloves Explained: Sparring, Training & Competition Differences

Understanding MMA Gloves

MMA gloves are frequently misunderstood — many beginners buy the wrong type for their training. This guide clarifies the differences between sparring, training, and competition MMA gloves.

4 oz Competition Gloves

Four-ounce gloves are designed for professional and amateur MMA competition. Minimal padding — designed for the ring or cage only. Not safe for training sparring. The Hayabusa T3 MMA 4oz Gloves are examples of competition-grade construction.

7 oz Training and Sparring Gloves

The standard for MMA training and controlled sparring. They add foam padding over the 4 oz competition design while maintaining the open-palm grappling capability. The Hayabusa T3 7oz Hybrid Gloves are the benchmark — using the same triple-splint wrist technology as the full boxing glove. The RDX F6 KARA MMA Sparring Gloves provide excellent value.

Hybrid Gloves (7–10 oz)

More padding than standard 7 oz while maintaining open-palm design. The Hayabusa T3 LX 7oz Hybrid Gloves are excellent for fighters who use the same glove across bag work and light sparring.

Competition-Specific: IMMAF Approved

For IMMAF sanctioned competition, you need specifically approved gloves. The RDX IMMAF Approved Shooter Grappling Gloves are officially approved. Do not use standard training gloves in IMMAF competition.

Buying Summary

For competition: approved competition gloves specific to your sanctioning body.
