Karate for Beginners: Everything You Need to Know to Get Started

What Is Karate?

Karate is a striking martial art originating in Okinawa, Japan. It emphasises punches, kicks, open-hand strikes, blocks, and sweeps executed through precise technique and disciplined training. The word 'karate' means 'empty hand.' Today it is one of the most widely practised martial arts in the world.

Major Karate Styles

Shotokan is the most widely taught style globally. Goju-Ryu blends hard and soft techniques. Kyokushin is the hardest full-contact style, famous for bare-knuckle body strikes. Wado-Ryu emphasises body movement and redirection over brute power.

What Happens in a Karate Class

A typical class includes: warm-up, kihon (individual technique drilling), kata (formalised sequences practised alone), kumite (partnered sparring), and cool-down. Classes typically last 45–90 minutes. Discipline and respect are integral — students bow to the instructor and training partners.

The Belt System

Karate uses a colored belt system from white (beginner) through various colored belts to black (dan grades). The progression varies by style but generally follows: white → yellow → orange → green → blue → brown → black. Average time to black belt at 2–3 classes per week is 4–6 years.

Gear You Need to Start

For your first class, all you need is a karate gi. A standard 8oz white karate gi with a white belt is the universal beginner uniform. As you progress and begin sparring, you will add: sparring mitts, foot protectors, shin guards, head guard, and a mouthguard.

Choosing a School

Look for qualified instructors (minimum 2nd or 3rd dan), a structured curriculum, and a training culture that balances discipline with a welcoming atmosphere for beginners. Trial classes are usually available before committing to a membership.
