How to Wash and Care for Your Martial Arts Uniform: Gi, Dobok & Judogi Care Guide

Why Uniform Care Matters

A martial arts uniform is an investment. Proper washing and care extends the life of your gi by years, prevents shrinkage, maintains colour, and reduces the bacteria that cause persistent odour.

Washing Instructions

Temperature: Cold water (30°C/86°F or below) for all martial arts uniforms. Hot water causes significant shrinkage in cotton gis and fades colours.
Cycle: Normal or gentle cycle.
Detergent: Regular laundry detergent is fine. Avoid bleach on coloured gis — it fades colours and weakens fabric.
Frequency: After every session. Letting sweat sit in a gi encourages bacterial growth, fabric degradation, and persistent odours.

Drying Instructions

Always hang dry your gi if possible. Turn inside out and hang in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. If you must use a dryer, use the lowest heat setting and remove while still slightly damp.

Odour Management

Add half a cup of white vinegar to the wash cycle. Soaking in a cold water and vinegar solution for 30 minutes before washing can help with severe cases. Ensure your gi is fully dry before storing.

Storage

Store your gi in a cool, dry, ventilated location. Avoid storing in airtight plastic bags — moisture trapped inside causes mildew and odour.
