Why Shin Guard Maintenance Matters
Shin guards absorb sweat and bacteria every training session. Without regular cleaning, foam padding breaks down faster and the smell becomes permanently embedded. Proper care after every session adds years to your guards' useful life.
After Every Session: The Basics
Within 30 minutes of finishing training, wipe down both the inner lining and outer shell with an antibacterial wipe. Pay special attention to the ankle strap area. Leave the guards in a well-ventilated area to dry fully.
Use a Gear Deodoriser
Place a glove deodoriser (Hayabusa Glove Deodorizer or Mayweather Boxing Deodorizer) inside each guard after training. One of the most effective maintenance habits you can build.
Deep Cleaning for Persistent Odour
Mix white vinegar and water (1:3 ratio) in a spray bottle. Spray the inside lightly, let sit 5 minutes, then wipe clean and air dry fully. Avoid soaking — this damages foam padding.
Can You Machine Wash Shin Guards?
Most shin guards should not be machine washed. Check the manufacturer's instructions. If permitted, use a cold gentle cycle in a mesh laundry bag and hang dry completely.
When to Replace Your Shin Guards
Replace when the foam bottoms out, the outer shell cracks, or straps no longer hold tightly. Well-maintained quality guards (Hayabusa T3 Full Back, RDX T15 Noir) typically last 2–4 years of consistent training.
