Starting Your BJJ Journey? Here's Everything You Need
Walking into your first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class can feel overwhelming — especially when you're not sure what gear to bring. This checklist breaks down the essentials for day one, what to add as you progress, and what's optional but helpful.
Day One Essentials
1. BJJ Gi (Kimono)
Your gi is the most important piece of equipment. For beginners, a single or pearl weave gi in white is the safest choice, as most academies require white for new students.
2. Rash Guard
Worn under your gi, a rash guard protects your skin from mat burns and reduces friction. Choose a short-sleeve or long-sleeve option depending on your preference.
3. BJJ Shorts or Spats (for No-Gi)
If your gym offers no-gi classes, you'll need board shorts or compression spats. Avoid shorts with pockets or belt loops that can catch fingers.
4. Mouthguard
Even in a beginner class, accidents happen. A basic boil-and-bite mouthguard is essential protection.
5. Flip Flops / Sandals
Always wear sandals when walking off the mat to the bathroom or changing room. This is a hygiene rule at virtually every academy.
Gear to Add Within Your First Month
6. Ear Guards (Headgear)
Ear guards help prevent cauliflower ear, especially for those who train frequently.
7. Finger Tape
BJJ puts a lot of stress on your fingers. Athletic tape helps protect joints and prevent sprains during gripping-heavy training.
Gear Hygiene Tips
Wash your gi after every session. Air dry rather than using a dryer to prevent excessive shrinkage. Wash your rash guard and shorts after every use.
