Boxing Training for Beginners: Your First 30 Days

Your First 30 Days in Boxing

Starting boxing as an adult is one of the most rewarding fitness decisions you can make. Here is what to expect and how to approach your first month to build a foundation that lasts.

Week 1: Learn the Stance and the Jab

Your first week should focus entirely on the orthodox (or southpaw) stance and the jab. The stance is the foundation everything else is built on. The jab is the most important punch in boxing. Drill it hundreds of times. Skip rope every session.

Week 2: Add the Cross and the Hook

Learn the mechanics — hip rotation for the cross, elbow leading for the hook — before adding power. Combine jab-cross (the 1-2) until it flows automatically.

Week 3: Footwork and Head Movement

Drill basic footwork: step-drag movement in all four directions. Add the slip to the beginning of combination drilling.

Week 4: Put It Together

Start putting combinations together on the bag: jab-cross (1-2), jab-cross-hook (1-2-3), body-head combinations. Keep rounds to 2 minutes initially.

The Most Important Rule: Consistency Over Intensity

Three quality sessions per week beats one all-out session followed by five days off.

Essential Gear for Your First Month

Boxing gloves (12–16 oz), hand wraps, a mouthguard, and access to a heavy bag. The Hayabusa E1 Boxing Gloves offer pro-level wrist support at an accessible price. The Hayabusa Deluxe Hand Wraps (180 inches) are the standard choice.
