Boxing Gloves Buying Guide: Training vs Competition

Not All Boxing Gloves Are Created Equal

Walk into any boxing gym and you'll see a variety of gloves — bag gloves, sparring gloves, competition gloves, and more. Choosing the wrong type can hurt your performance, your training partners, or even your hands.

The Main Types of Boxing Gloves

1. Training / All-Purpose Gloves

The most versatile gloves and the best starting point for beginners. Used for the heavy bag, pads, and light sparring. If you're buying your first pair, start here.

2. Bag Gloves

Lighter and more compact, designed specifically for heavy bag and pad work. Do not use bag gloves for sparring — they don't provide enough protection for your partner.

3. Sparring Gloves

Heavily padded to protect both you and your training partner. Typically 14oz–18oz. Most gyms require dedicated sparring gloves.

4. Competition / Fight Gloves

Lighter (8oz–10oz for most amateur and professional bouts) and designed for maximum speed and impact. Used exclusively for sanctioned fights, not daily training.

Training vs Competition Gloves: Key Differences

Training gloves: 12oz–18oz, thick multi-layer padding, for bag/pads/sparring. Competition gloves: 8oz–10oz, minimal firm padding, for sanctioned bouts only.

How to Choose the Right Glove Weight (oz)

  • 8oz–10oz — Competition use only
  • 12oz — Training for fighters under 150 lbs
  • 14oz — Most common all-purpose training weight (150–180 lbs)
  • 16oz — Heavier fighters (180+ lbs) and recommended for sparring
  • 18oz — Heavyweights or maximum sparring protection

Don't Forget Hand Wraps

No matter which gloves you choose, always wear hand wraps underneath. They protect your knuckles, wrists, and the small bones in your hand — and they extend the life of your gloves by absorbing sweat.
